Intro to Aquaponics AQP 101

Description

Participants will learn the basics about aquaponics in a friendly and fun atmosphere. Topics for the class are:

  • The aquaponics cycle: fish, plants, bacteria

  • Aquaponics’ history and place in the world today

  • The benefits and drawbacks of aquaponics

  • The basic components of an aquaponic system

  • Water quality and testing

  • System startup – “cycling”

  • A diagram and explanation of the most basic aquaponic system

Participants will receive a fact sheet with all relevant information.

Doors open at 5:30 for social meet n' greet. Feel free to bring your own snacks or beer. Class starts promptly at 6:00 because we have a lot of learning to do!

Conversation and Q & A can continue past 7:00, but may have to migrate to a nearby establishment depending on daily building schedule.

Class is taught by Brian Filipowich, Director of Anacostia Aquaponics and Chair of the national Aquaponics Association. Class takes place on Cultivate the City's beautiful rooftop farm, above Jenks Hardware Store.
